Running one company doesn't mean you can only build one thing
BuildsByBuchanan builds custom software for other businesses — web applications, PMO systems, admin dashboards, business websites. That's a full-time, client-facing operation on its own. Appxcel is a deliberately separate answer to a different question: what happens if Sivario Buchanan builds and owns consumer software outright, instead of only building it for someone else's brief?
Appxcel is a real, separate South African company — not a side project folded into BuildsByBuchanan's client roster. Sivario founded it and holds both the CEO and CTO roles: he sets the product direction and writes the code that ships it.
The problem with routing everything through Google Play and Apple's App Store
A consumer app studio usually means accepting whatever distribution terms Google and Apple set — review delays, revenue cuts, and a storefront where a new app competes for attention against millions of others. Appxcel's brief was to keep control of that layer where it made sense to: build the app-store experience the studio actually wanted, rather than accepting the default.
What we built
- Appxcel's own brand, marketing site, and company identity — built in partnership with BuildsByBuchanan and written in Kittine, the in-house Rust/WebAssembly language.
- The Appxcel Store — a self-serve download platform listing every Appxcel app, with Android APK downloads and iOS PWA install instructions side by side.
- An automated VirusTotal scan-before-listing flow so every Android APK has a public, verifiable clean-scan result before a user ever downloads it.
- The studio's first shipped product, Monthlys, a period and ovulation tracker — proof of the whole approach working end to end, not just a plan on paper.
The result
Appxcel now runs as a genuinely separate company with its own product, its own store, and its own identity — while staying close enough to BuildsByBuchanan that lessons from each feed back into the other. Kittine, built at BuildsByBuchanan, now powers Appxcel's site. Distribution and mobile-app lessons learned shipping Monthlys now shape how BuildsByBuchanan advises clients who need a mobile strategy of their own.
