How Much Should a Website Cost in South Africa? (Honest Breakdown)
You've probably been quoted anything from R500 to R150,000. Both are technically possible. Here's how to understand what you're actually paying for — and what fair value looks like in the South African market.
Why there's no single answer
Website pricing varies wildly because "website" covers an enormous range of products. A single-page business site is a completely different product from a booking platform with user accounts, payment integration, and a custom admin dashboard. Both are "websites." Neither should cost the same.
The price tiers, explained
Under R1,000
Usually a DIY template, a Wix/Squarespace subscription resold to you, or an offshore freelancer. Typically lacks local context, proper SEO setup, or ongoing support.
Risky
Quoted on request
The realistic range for a properly built, professionally designed small business website in South Africa. Mobile-first, Google-ready, with WhatsApp integration.
Sweet spot
R5,000 – R15,000
Mid-range web apps, e-commerce stores with payment gateway integration, booking systems with user accounts. Takes more time and technical depth.
Mid-range
R20,000+
Full platforms, SaaS products, enterprise-grade systems. Significant projects with significant requirements — scoped on a per-project basis.
Enterprise
South Africa pricing note: We price for the South African market. You're not paying inflated international rates, but you are paying for real work done properly. No hidden costs — everything is scoped upfront.
What's often not included (and should be)
A common trap: a cheap quote that doesn't include hosting, domain registration, email setup, or revisions. Watch out for these hidden extras that make a "cheap" website expensive fast:
Hosting: Often R150–R500/month extra
Domain registration: R350/year — often charged separately
SSL certificate: Should be free (Let's Encrypt), but some charge for it
Revisions: "One round of changes" that bills per hour after
Google setup: Basic SEO and Google Business Profile should be standard
Every quote we provide includes the first month of hosting, Google setup, and a WhatsApp contact button as standard — no line-item surprises.
Monthly payment vs once-off
A monthly payment plan means you get a professional website without a large initial outlay, and it includes hosting and support. The trade-off is you pay more in total over time. Both models work — the right one depends on your cash flow. We provide a clear quote covering both options.
Before accepting any website quote, ask these questions:
Is hosting included, and for how long?
What does it cost after the first period?
How many rounds of revisions are included?
Is domain registration included or extra?
Who owns the website if I stop paying?
Will it show up on Google, or do I need to pay extra for SEO?
Want a clear, honest quote for your project? We'll scope it, price it, and explain every line — no surprises.
